Tasty display: Banker turned pastry chef Maria Mayhew opened her first shop at Sutherland after re-training at TAFE.
When former corporate banker Maria Mayhew decided to change her career, she swapped her power suit for an apron at TAFE NSW and launched her new baking career.
Now, the TAFE Ultimo graduate pastry chef has established Sweet Mayhem at Sutherland.
“I needed a change,” she said. “I was dabbling in baking at home and decided to secure a formal qualification.”
She enrolled in certificate III retail bakery (combined) and hasn’t looked back. She is now looking forward to growing her business.
“I wanted to apply what I was learning so I volunteered at Black Star Pastry in Newtown, the now famous home of the Strawberry Watermelon Cake. I’m proud to say I was one of their original chefs.”
