Hazelhurst Arts Centre has announced its 2019 exhibitions which will present a rich program of contemporary art for the 19th year of Hazelhurst’s exhibitions.
Director of Hazelhurst Arts Centre, Belinda Hanrahan said the gallery has become one of the most successful regional galleries in Australia.
‘‘We are thrilled the community of the Sutherland Shire has embraced the exhibitions and programs presented at Hazelhurst,” Ms Hanrahan said.
‘‘Art is for everyone and we aim to offer a range of inspiring and enjoyable programs for the whole community to enjoy and continue to be a special place provided by their council.
Mayor of Sutherland Shire, Carmelo Pesce, said Hazelhurst was a thriving arts space.
“In the past year almost 220,000 people have visited Hazelhurst and enjoyed all the arts centre has to offer,” Cr Pesce said.
Ms Hanrahan said she hoped people will enjoy the 2019 program particularly the two Hazelhurst curated exhibitions, RococoColonial which overlays the timeframes of the Rococo with the European mapping of Australia, and The Electric Surf Dream which will examine the history of surfing in southern Sydney.
Another expected drawcard will be David Hockney: Prints 1961-2015 a touring exhibition from the NGA from July 13 to September 8.
David Hockney has been an important figure on the international art scene for half a century, and he has been among the most experimental in terms of embracing new art forms and technologies.
The exhibition will explore the broader history of his printmaking practice through key works from the NGA’s extensive collection, one of the largest in the world. Since 1954, making prints has been an integral part of Hockney’s art practice and he has created a significant body of work.

RococoColonial
- 4 May to 30 June
Curated by Gary Carsely with Carrie Kibbler and Sarah Gurich, RococoColonial is a partnership project between Hazelhurst Arts Centre and Bathurst Regional Gallery.
The Rococo was the dominant 18th century artistic movement across Europe and by extension, the colonies in the new world. Its rise in popularity corresponded to the schematic mapping by the Europeans of the Australian coastline.
In the art of the Rococo, play and life are indistinguishable and it introduced a radically new concept of reality, a reality in which dream, fantasy and foreboding are palpable, constantly present elements. Coincidently, today many contemporary Australian artists are using similar approaches to question the political, cultural and economic realities of our time and navigate the experiences of increasing inequality, environmental degradation and growing intolerance.
RococoColonial is an artist initiated project that engages with the works of Australian artists and links the regional gallery at the site of first sustained European incursion (Botany Bay/Hazelhurst Arts Centre) with the regional gallery at the site of their first abiding inland settlement (Bathurst).
