Bayside Council has announced details of its Australia Day 2019 program.

Depena Reserve in Dolls Point will again be the venue for Bayside’s Australia Day celebrations when Bayside Council announces its 2019 Citizen of the Year.

The official event starts at 8.15am on Saturday, January 26 with a Welcome to Country and flag raising.

There will also be a Citizenship Ceremony as part of ongoing celebrations across the country to mark the 70th anniversary of the first Australian citizenship ceremony in 1949.

Bayside Council has announced that is  Australia Day Ambassador for 2019 is former SBS and ABC television broadcaster and journalist, Indira Naidoo.

Indira has turned her journalistic experience to the issues of food security, environment and sustainability 

Her first book, the best-selling The Edible Balcony published in 2011, about growing food in small spaces, was launched in London, Hong Kong and New York. Her follow-up book about community gardening, The Edible City, was published in 2015.

Bayside Council is presenting a program of Aussie-inspired entertainment starting from 10am  along with a number of with free events and activities for the whole family to enjoy including a Didgeridoo Performance, a Spin Hoop Dance Workshop, face painting, lamington making and a community sausage sizzle by local Scouts.

Music will be provided by the Diramu Aboriginal Band and the Party Starters Band.

Bayside Council mayor Bill Saravinovski encouraged everyone to attend.

“What better place to share the day and celebrate being Australian with your local community than the beautiful Botany Bay,” he said.

The Botany Aquatic Centre will also be open on Australia Day with free inflatables and giant games to keep the kids amused.
