A lifetime of dedication to hockey has earned a trio of shire women recognition in this year’s Australia Day honours.
Carol Harriss, of Gymea, has been awarded an OAM for her service to hockey through the Sydney South Hockey Association.
A life member of SSHA since 2002, Mrs Harriss is the association’s director of facilities having held the role of senior vice president from 1984 to 2014.
Mrs Harriss is a former council representative with the NSW Women’s Hockey Association and has held administrative roles at local and district levels since 1969.
While she remains a technical officer with Hockey NSW and Hockey Australia, Mrs Harriss has also enjoyed a long and distinguished career on the field.
Mrs Harriss played with the St George Women’s Hockey Club from 1967 to 1986 before joining Cronulla RSL.
She stayed there for 11 years before joining Tartans Hockey Club where she has been a player since 1999. She was inducted as a Tartans life member in 2015.
Mrs Harriss was also the recipient of the women’s Masters NSW player of the year award in 2016.
Julene Mangelsdorf was also awarded an OAM in this year’s Australia Day awards for her commitment and contribution to hockey.
Mrs Mangelsdorf, of Oyster Bay, was the recipient of the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 and also received a 25-year service award from the NSW Women’s Hockey Association in 2002.
Mrs Mangelsdorf was inducted as a Hockey NSW life member in 1987.
She has held many roles in her many years of service to hockey including honorary treasurer of the Central Coast Women’s Hockey Association from 1969 to 1995.
Mrs Mangelsdorf was also the honorary treasurer of Tartans Women’s Hockey Club from 1976 to 1982 and the NSW Women’s Hockey Association from 1976 to 2010.
Patricia Wade also received an OAM for her dedication to hockey.
Mrs Wade, from Miranda, has served as secretary of the NSW Women’s Hockey Association and Hockey NSW.
She has been a member of the Sutherland Shire Women’s Hockey Association for 60 years and a life member since 1982.
Mrs Wade is also a life member of Tartans Hockey Club.
She was a recipient of the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 and Meritorious Award from the NSW Women’s Hockey Association.
Mrs Wade also featured in the book, A Tribute to NSW Women’s Hockey 1908-2008 produced by the NSW Women’s Hockey Association.
