Fitness groups will be banned from running in large numbers on the pedestrian bridge over the river at Woronora.
Sutherland Shire Council has taken the action as “a precaution”, even though a structural engineer found the concrete footbridge is structurally sound.
A sign posted near the bridge reads, “This bridge currently has no structural issues, however running groups will cause excessive vibration, which may damage the structure.
“Council will be placing signs prohibiting this activity in the near future”.
A council spokeswoman said feedback had been received from residents “expressing their concerns that fitness-training groups using the Prince Edward Park footbridge may be putting the structure of the bridge at risk of collapse”.
“In response, council arranged for an assessment by a structural engineer, who confirmed that the footbridge is structurally sound,” she said.
“However, as an added precaution for the structure we will be installing advisory signage asking the community to not run in large groups across the bridge and for safety reasons to not jump from the bridge.
“Our aim is always for our community to safely enjoy active lives connected to nature.”
