The popular cycleway around Botany Bay can be traced back to plans announced in 1984.
In that year, Rockdale Council outlined how it would build a network of cycleways along the foreshore park from Cooks River to Sans Souci.
Up till that time, much of the parkland was very rough and there were only small sections of walking paths.
Many years later, the cycleway would be linked to paths built by Sutherland Shire Council.
A Leader report in 1984 said, “Already [the council] has decided to forge ahead with the cycle track link between Rockdale and Tempe.
‘‘And there is more to come.
‘‘Cyclists and pedestrians will eventually get a first-hand view of Rockdale’s foreshores, when the promenade / bicycle track is completed.
‘‘The finished track will start at Tempe Bridge and finish at Captain Cook Bridge.’’
Alderman Reg Whiteoak said, “It will be beautiful when it is finished because it will go all along the beachfront’’.
