Hot on the heels of scoring herself a Top 10 spot in Triple J's 2018 Hottest 100 over the weekend, Ruby Fields delivered a blistering ‘Like a Version’ for Triple J this morning.
The Cronulla singer songwriter, who came in at #9 in the Hottest 100 with her track Dinosaurs, covered The Unguarded Moment to resounding applause.
Fields said her mother had always been at her to do a cover of The Church’s 1981 classic track which had meant so much to her mother in her adolescence.
Fields, known for her grungey '90s guitar, observational lyrics and proudly Australian accent, also treated fans to a rendition of her confessional track Dinosaurs.
"I used to love dinosaurs when I was a kid/I wasn't afraid, I was brave and courageous with everything I did," she sings.
It was a song that clearly resonated across the country given its Hottest 100 ranking.
At the time of the track’s release, Fields shared: “It’s about introducing yourself to fear as a kid. Before we were afraid of simple and complex things and when you still thought of a T. Rex as a toy instead of a vicious carnivore, ya know?”
Fields first came to prominence when she uploaded her debut single I Want on to Triple J Unearthed back in 2017. It didn’t take long for the self-taught artist to catch the attention of the music community, with the track being spun on Triple J the same day.
Since then, she has gone from strength to strength with her next big gig being the Laneway Festival across Australia this month starting in Sydney on Sunday, February 3.
Ocean Alley took out top spot in the 2018 Hottest 100 with their funky, slow groove Confidence and also claimed 10th spot with Knees dropping into the business end of the countdown.
The six-piece from Sydney also provided a perfect bookend to the count by placing 100th with Happy Sad.
This is the second year the Hottest 100 has been held on January 27 after host broadcaster Triple J moved the count from Australia Day last year.
The shift was criticised by some listeners and politicians at the time but was overwhelmingly supported by those who voted.
There were 65 Australian songs in the list of 100 and 21 artists appeared for the first time.
A record number of votes were cast in this year's count with more than 2.7 million - up 15 per cent or 370,000 votes on the previous year.
