A Miranda couple have died in hospital following a high speed crash in Dapto last week.
The accident occurred about 10am on Thursday, February 7, when a grey Volkswagen Tiguan travelling south on the M1 Princes Motorway crashed into the rear of a mobile crane that was heading in the same direction.
The driver and passenger of the car, a man and woman, both aged 80 and residents of Miranda, were trapped in the vehicle.
An initial police statement did not state their relationship, but a spokesman said later they were husband and wife.
After the accident, the couple were taken to Wollongong Hospital with internal injuries.
Later that day, the man was transferred to St George Hospital where he died.
The woman remained at Wollongong Hospital where she died on Saturday.
NSW Ambulance Illawarra district Inspector Terry Morrow told the Illawarra Mercury after the crash they received “basically minor injuries”.
The rescue helicopter had attended but was not required.
Inspector Morrow said the crash involved “a fair impact”.
“But I think the car took the impact away from the people,” he said.
“I think they were quite protected in the car … the airbags were deployed and all the safety mechanisms worked, and basically relieved them of any serious injuries.”
Two men travelling in the mobile crane, a 48-year-old Albion Park man and a 42-year-old Dapto man, were not injured.
