Labor has promised to spend $175 million to upgrade Heathcote Road if it wins the state election on March 23.
A package of improvements includes $2 million to plan and scope the duplication of the bridge over Woronora River.
The government has only committed to widening the existing bridge, and it would still only have one lane in each direction.
Labor also promised to widen Heathcote Road to two lanes in each direction between Princes Highway, Engadine, and New Illawarra Road, Lucas Heights.
The section of road between The Avenue at Voyager Point and Infantry Parade, Holsworthy, would be widened in the same way.
Shadow Treasurer Ryan Park announced the proposed funding with Labor candidates Maryanne Stuart (Heathcote) and Charishma Kaliyanda (Holsworthy).
Ms Stuart said more than 36,000 people travelled on Heathcote Road every day.
“That’s a lot of people who are put at risk on such a narrow bridge,” she said.
“It just wasn’t meant to handle this much traffic.”
“Widening lanes on the bridge just isn’t a long term solution.
“We will need to duplicate the bridge, and Labor is putting in the hard work needed to make that possible.”
Mr Park claimed Liberal MPs Lee Evans and Melanie Gibbons were “dragging their heels on Heathcote Road”.
“Sure the Liberals made one announcement, but this isn’t a new issue,” he said.
“Lee Evans and Melanie Gibbons have known about these problems for eight years, so why did it take an election for them to finally act?”
In 2018, the state government said $173 million would be allocated to upgrade Heathcote Road.
Only $4 million was allocated in the 2018 state budget for the Woronora River Bridge and approaches at Engadine, with $7.6 million towards duplicating the road between Voyager Point and Hammondville.
Mr Evans said at the time plans for the bridge upgrade included widening the structure, although his preference was for duplication.
Mr Evans said the approach roads on both sides of the bridge would be widened to two lanes in each direction.
