Sutherland seniors have many reasons to celebrate during the next few weeks, with their very own festival ready to kick-off.
There are almost 50,000 residents who are aged over 60 years living in the Shire and Sutherland Shire Council has compiled a program of events for the 2019 Seniors Festival which will be of interest to everybody.
Running from February 13 through until March 5, the days will be jammed packed with 25 diverse events.
“Seniors Festival is our chance to thank, celebrate and recognise seniors for the positive contributions they make to the community through hosting a range of different activities that they can enjoy with other like-minded residents,” Sutherland Shire mayor Carmelo Pesce said.
As well as entertainment, films, health and wellbeing events, art and craft, hobbies and interest groups, education seminars and talks, and opportunities to explore the great outdoors, the council has organised two special events: the Retirement and Recreation Expo, and the Take Me Back When…A Showcase of Photos of Living Through Time in the Shire Exhibition.
Together, these events are a nice combination of embracing the future while fondly remembering the past.
Retirement and Recreation Expo
Find out what activities, groups and clubs you can connect with at this full day expo at Gymea Tradies on Saturday, February 16.
Come and find out what the Shire has to offer for retirees including; gardening, exercise, computers, history, volunteering, music, Probus, Lions, Older Women’s Network and more.
“The Expo will focus on wellness, activity, connecting people and encouraging life-long learning and it’s a great way to hear about everything that is on offer for seniors,” Mayor Pesce said.
A photographic step back through time
In the Take Me Back When…A Showcase of Photos of Living Through Time in the Shire Exhibition, more than 50 photographic memories will be on show.
Submitted by residents, these images highlight the memorable moments lived in the Shire, whether it be a recent photograph with their grandchildren or a reflection from their childhood.
The exhibition will be launched at Gymea Tradies on the same day as the Recreation and Retirement Expo, and will feature for one week in the Broadhurst Gallery at Hazelhurst Arts Centre from February 22 to March 5.
There are so many more interesting events to enjoy in this year’s festival.
