Labor has promised $5 million to expand commuter car parking and pedestrian access at Helensburgh train station if it wins the March 23 election.
Treasury spokesman Ryan Park made the announcement with Labor candidate for Heathcote, Maryanne Stuart.
Ms Stuart said, due to timetable cuts made by the government, residents from places like Otford, Stanwell Park and Wombarra were forced to travel to Helensburgh to access the more regular train services.
"Helensburgh has become a local transport hub, but increases in bus services and traffic are putting people’s safety at risk," she said.
“Local car parks are full by about 7am most days.
"People are forced to park on the grass or on nature strips, then run across rough terrain and busy roads just to get to work on time.”
Ms Stuart said Labor’s funding would also "deliver safer pedestrian access around the station, and for locals who have no choice but to walk over poorly lit, dirt tracks to get to the station".
“Because Helensburgh sits on an escarpment, in winter it gets dark fast leaving locals with no choice but to walk rough and dangerous tracks."
"That’s why our funding will also address lighting and safety issues.
"Labor will work with residents, the council and with experts to carefully manage Helensburgh’s unique geographical and environmental challenges."
