Sutherland North Public School has been selected to be part of the University of Technology, Sydney's primary school STEM pilot program.
The eight-week Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics pilot is targeted at year 5 and 6 pupils, and their parents and teachers, and aims to build interest in the field from a young age - way before they reach tertiary level.
As an in-curriculum program, the project-based learning initiative gives children the opportunity to undertake design thinking, technical skill development and collaboration with peers.
They work with university lecturers in a variety of projects, for example, testing soil to measure moisture levels when learning about plant growth.
Sutherland North Public School is one of four in Sydney that will trial the program.
The program has been partially funded by the NSW Office for Women as part of the Investing in Women Funding Program 2018 and concludes June 2019. Women in Engineering and IT also received a Social Impact grant from UTS Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion, which will be used to design impact evaluation for the pilot.
