THE rivers of St George and Sutherland Shire may not run green and you would be lucky to find a four-leaf clover anywhere — but St Patrick’s Day is growing increasingly popular in the region each year.
Also known as the Feast of Saint Patrick, the event, on Sunday, March 17, marks the death date of one of Ireland’s best-known patron saints.
For many Irish living in Australia the day is one of celebration and happiness and an opportunity to preserve Irish traditions and customs.
At the Miranda RSL, St Paddy’ Day will be celebrated with music from Ted (Eamon) King of Dublin .
Ted has being doing St Pat’s Day at the RSL for the past 14 years with his band Dargle River.
The band is no longer but Ted will return to Diggers in the duo, The Sutherland Brothers, with Paul Carpenter.
The duo have a monthly gig at Jimmys Bar Randwick and the venue is packed every time they perform.
At the RSL helping The Sutherland Brothers on the day will be Irish dancers from the Fiona Moore Irish dance group, Patrick Brady (ex Irish Drovers folk group) and a champion Irish piper.
The fun starts at noon.
Over at the Bankstown Sports Club you can get a head start on St Patrick’s Day on Saturday, March 16, by enjoying the award winning and captivating Celtic Beat: Legends of Ireland.
Go on an inspirational journey through 60 years of Irish music and humour with the artistry of multi-talented performers Peter Byrne, Paul Martell, Eileen McCann and Shannon Bacall.
Show starts at 8.30pm.
Eireborne is a tribute of music and dance from Ireland to the world.
Leading Irish dancers from international hit shows such as Riverdance and Lord of the Dance will perform with a live band at the Revesby Workers Club on Saturday, March 16, at 8.30pm.
Eireborne is a celebration – the entire soundtrack is comprised only of songs performed by Irish artists including U2, Van Morrison, Enya, Riverdance, Hozier, The Script and many more.
This show pushes Irish choreography to the limits and is fused with contemporary jazz, tap and ballet. The athleticism is non-stop throughout as dancers attack the floor and will have the audience standing in their seats.
The dancers and musicians are accompanied onstage by a charismatic Irish barman … with a cheeky sense of Irish wit and humour, he transports the audience to his Irish pub in Dublin for a pint of ale and a night of rollicking good fun.
