A hearty project with a speedy need for a feed has wheeled into Gymea.
Gymea Anglican Church has partnered with Anglicare on a community project that delivers food at subsidised rates to those struggling financially.
Anglicare’s Mobile Community Pantry, which operated in more than 45 churches throughout Sydney, begins services on March 14.
The pantry will operate fortnightly from 10.30am-11:30am.
Coordinator Steve Leitch says this is a more affordable option for people who are disadvantaged in Sutherland Shire.
The church has run a food bank from its Gymea Bay premises in recent years, and the mobile version is an expansion of care, he said.
"Shoppers pay just $10 for up to $60 worth of great food," he said.
"We’re aiming to make life a little easier for them and there’s a group of welcoming volunteers who can help with a cuppa and a chat. We’re about providing food and community.”
Senior Pastor, Graham Crew, says the new program is an expression of the church's vision.
“I’ve been here just nine years, but this Church has been a part of the Shire since 1927," he said. "Our members are passionate people.”
Other mobile community pantries include St Phil’s Caringbah, 402 Port Hacking Rd, South Caringbah, 1:30pm-2:30pm every second Friday, and St John’s Sutherland, 43a Belmont St, 1:30pm-2:30pm every second Monday.
