People who suffer from poor bone density will benefit from a community seminar being held in Sutherland Shire this month.
Sutherland Shire Council is collaborating with Arthritis NSW, Osteoporosis NSW, BPS Tensegrity and Home Modification Solutions, in hosting a free senior’s seminar on March 20 to provide information about arthritis and osteoporosis and the treatment options available.
The seminar will discuss research, natural therapies and exercise programs aimed at reducing the effects of arthritis and osteoporosis.
There will also be the chance to view the latest in mobility aids that can help those affected remain independent and on the move.
Sutherland Shire Mayor Carmelo Pesce says the seminar is a great opportunity for seniors to find out more about these conditions.
“Arthritis and osteoporosis affect a lot of people in our community and I can speak from first-hand experience," he said.
“I’m currently recovering from hip replacement surgery as a result of suffering from arthritis, but I’m finding the more I keep moving and listening to the advice of the experts, the better I’m getting.
“It is so important to stay mobile and maintain good health at all stages of life and this seminar will also explain the best types of exercises that will help you stay active and keep your joints moving.
“This seminar will help people better understand their condition and provide them with very helpful information and advice about how to improve their quality of life.”
Affecting one in six Australians, arthritis is the leading cause of chronic pain and the second most common cause of disability and early retirement due to ill health in Australia.
Osteoporosis Australia's online assessment tool ‘Know Your Bones’ can also provide people with an indication of bone health, especially if someone has not had a bone density scan in the past two years.
The seminar will also include a practical and hands on presentation by physiotherapist and Pilates instructor Lana Johnson, who will explain the benefits of exercise and mobility.
Melinda Dimarco from Home Modification Solutions will discuss how to prevent falls in the home environment, home modifications and assistive technology.
