Shire Music Theatre’s 45 year history of bringing quality entertainment to the shire continues with their latest production of High School Musical, opening at the Sutherland Memorial Arts Theatre on March 22.
This high energy musical was first brought to life on the stage in 2006 following the wildly popular movie which debuted earlier that same year.
The story follows two high school students, Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez who meet at a party on New Year's Eve, where they have a connection forged through singing.
On the first day returning to school, following the Christmas break, they discover that Gabriella has been transferred to the same school as Troy and their love story evolves.
The production follows the age old story of jock meets nerd, jock falls for nerd, as Troy and Gabreilla audition together for their high school production of Juliet and Romeo.
The modern up tempo numbers including Getcha Head In The Game, Stick to the Status Quo and Bop to the Top will have the audience dancing in their seats and the sublime duets of Start of Something New, What I’ve Been Looking For and Breaking Free will leave the audience spellbound.
Troy (played by Oatley’s James Stewart) and Gabriella (played by Engadine's, Phoebe Vinciguerra) weave a magical story of teenage love.
Comic relief is provided by twins, Sharpay (played by Cronulla's Indianna Erickson) and Ryan (played by Miranda’s Sasha Cole).
Vinciguerra has dreamed of playing the role of Gabriella since she first saw the production when she was 10.
‘‘The music is iconic – Cellular Fusion and Counting on You are my favourites,’’ she says.
Directed by Kirawee’s Jamie Lee Kemp, and featuring more than 30 young performers from St George and Sutherland Shire, High School Musical is running for 10 performances, including four matinees.
Performance dates are Friday, March 22 until Sunday, March 31.
