The race to surpass last year's phenomenal efforts in banding together for a common cause has taken its first steps, and while the whistle is yet to blow, now is the time to pencil an upcoming event into the calendar.
Sutherland Shire Relay for Life 2019 is around the corner, on the weekend of May 4.
This is the 18th year of the major community gathering that takes a stand against cancer.
Against an oceanic backdrop of coastal beauty on Don Lucas Reserve, Cronulla, the relay takes its mark trackside, with supporters arm-in-arm strolling for healthy futures.
It is a chance for the community to recognise and celebrate cancer survivors, patients and their carers, to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer and to raise money to help save more lives.
All money raised for Cancer Council NSW will help fund medical research, prevention and support program directly within the community, targeting residents who have been diagnosed with the disease.
In the past 16 years, the Sutherland relay has raised more than $5 million.
This year, the goal is a whopping $400,000. So far, more than $43,000 has been tallied, and with 50 days to go, each dollar donated is looking bright.
The annual event encourages individuals and teams to challenge themselves in keeping a baton moving for 24 hours.
Volunteers on the sidelines are also welcomed, to encourage participants, whether through a pat on the back or with information provided on the day.
Entertainment will also delight on a big stage, with live music, tasty food, rides and fun games for children.
Relay participants will also have the chance to camp on-site overnight, and take part in the emotionally-charged candlelight ceremony at dusk, in remembrance of those lost and in hope of those going through tough battles in their treatment.
