Sutherland Shire has joined a world-wide response to the mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, offering condolences and support.
The council, at its meeting on Monday night, observed a minute's silence "in memory of the victims of this unspeakable crime".
Mayor Carmelo Pesce has also written to the mayor of the City of Christchurch, Lianne Danziel.
"On behalf of Sutherland Shire and our community, I write to express our sincere condolences to those affected by the indiscriminate act of violence in Christchurch on Friday, 15 March 2019," the letter said.
"We were all devastated to hear of the number of innocent people who were attacked in a place of worship.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with those families who have lost loved ones, and with those who were injured.
"At our council meeting on 18 March, we observed a minute's silence to mark the loss and suffering of so many.
"I would like to offer council's assistance to you and your community as you endeavour to recover from this tragedy.
"If there is a manner in which Sutherland Shire Council can assist you with this process, please contact me so that this can be arranged.
"Whilst nothing can diminish the tragedy of lost lives and injuries, please be assured that the Christchurch community is in our thoughts and prayers."
