Botany Bay Yacht Club has finished its spring 2018-19 spring and summer series with strong fleets enjoying a season of close racing.
The Spring Twilight Series was in the balance until the final eight races with Windy Point (Adams 8, Peter Bennett), In Tune (Sonata 8, David Craddock) and Misconception (Endeavour 26, George Reed) coming out on top of the leader board.
In Tune narrowly leads the New Year Series from Tic Tacs (E26, Peter Ashton) and Misconception.
Racing on Botany Bay during the Saturday afternoon Spring Series saw winds from all directions of the compass with different winners from the 16-boat fleet across the seven races.
Scandal (Holland 30, Ian Manley) carded a consistent series to win from Wasabi (Cole 23, Stephen McLennan) and Stingray (Ross 830, Greg Lerond).
Griffin (Farr 1020, George Houridis) won race five to take out the prized Commodore's Cup. Sadly Manley, a great friend and former Rum Consortium member, passed away on December 27.
Stockade (Eureka 31, Graeme Herrick) narrowly won the sprint series from Red Ned (Whiting 32, Brian Leverton) and Tic Tacs.
The summer series was well won by Vamos (J109, Grant Ballantyne) carding four wins from seven races from Griffin and Stingray.
The ladies skippers race, sailed in a perfect bay nor-easter, was won by Jeeves (E27, Sue Huggett) from Resurgent (Ross 930, Lydia Widders) and Vamos (Karen Ballantyne).
The club was pleased to host the 2019 Endeavour National Championships in January, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the E26.
Local boat Kokomo (Grant McKellar) won all six races to take the title, with Witch Ways II (Jeff Finnegan, Drummoyne SC) second and Wundurra (Brian Christenson, BBYC) third.
The 183rd Australia Day Regatta and dinner at the clubhouse on January 26 was well attended, wrapped up by the view across the bay to the Carss Park fireworks.
Club boats have again competed strongly in inter-club series, with Stockade winning a heat of its division in the Sydney Regatta at Middle Harbour Yacht Club and Resurgent competing in the Navigators Cup out of Cronulla Sailing Club.
The club welcome enquiries from yachties interested in enjoying Friday or Saturday racing on Kogarah and Botany bays. New crew are welcome.
