As a doctor, Paul Lam was keen to find something which could help him manage his arthritis.
A local general practitioner (GP) in St George for more than four decades, Dr Lam began to learn the ancient Chinese tradition of tai chi.
Along the way Dr Lam found that not only did the series of gentle flowing movements of tai chi improve his arthritis, it transformed his health.
And that is why Dr Lam is now passionate about sharing the many benefits tai chi can offer.
Because tai chi looks like a series of gentle flowing movements, it is hard to imagine how many health benefits it can bring.

What is tai chi?
Dr Lam explains that tai chi is an art and an exercise from ancient China.
“Created based on the laws of nature, nowadays most people practice tai chi for health and relaxation,” Dr Lam said.
“Tai chi places great emphasis on building internal strength. Ongoing practice will bring harmony of the inner and outer self through the integration of the mind and body.
“It is suitable for almost anyone and can be practiced anywhere.”
What are the health benefits of tai chi?
“Because tai chi looks like a series of gentle flowing movements, it is hard to imagine how many health benefits it can bring,” Dr Lam said.
“More than 500 medical studies have shown tai chi improves balance, strength and immunity. It relieves arthritis pain, reduces stress, builds inner strength, may lower blood pressure and the risk of diabetes and heart disease.”
Tai chi is proven to improve almost all aspects of health, as Dr Lam said it has done for himself and many of his patients.
Secrets of tai chi
Being a medical scientist, Dr Lam was curious about how tai chi worked. Perhaps there was a hidden secret?
During the last 40 years, the doctor traveled to China and around the world to participate in medical research, and has also studied his patients and tai chi students.
He firmly believes he has found the secret of tai chi.
“The tai chi secret comes from the set of essential principles that all authentic tai chi follows. The principles are based on the laws of nature and Chinese Traditional Medicine,” he said.
Dr Lam worked with a team of tai chi and medical experts to decipher these secrets and incorporated them into gentle and graceful tai chi movements.
