In an historic and momentous occasion for quilling Sutherland Shires Licia Politis was awarded the prestigious Frances Binnie Award at the Sydney Royal Easter Show arts and crafts preview night.
Licia quilled a succulent wreath created out of hand rolled paper and glue and her work was awarded the most meritorious exhibit in the Standard of Excellence Showcase 'Champion of Champions'.
Quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs.
This is the first time quilling or paper art of any kind has received the Frances Binnie prize, which is donated yearly in memory of her dedicated service to the Auxiliary Committee of the Arts section at the Showand and it will be on display until Tuesday 23rd April in the Standard of Excellence Showcase.
Most of her inspiration came from the love of growing succulents which are easy to care for and require little water in Australia's arid climate Licia told 'All Things Paper' .
"I tried to use as many quilling techniques as possible in my design. The list includes closed loose rolls, tight coils, dimensional tight coils, ring coils, interlocking ring coils, bandaging, wheat ears, alternate side looping/huskings, vortex coils, and crimping " Licia said.
