The Moving Picture Show is again presenting an afternoon of silent films and orchestral music at the Mortdale RSL Club later this month.
Organised by Jan Thorp, The Moving Picture Show screens classic silent films shown in Sydney during the 1920s, accompanied by an orchestra playing the music from an extensive collection once owned by the State Theatre and used through Sydney during the silent era.
The show includes a man who does all the sound effects as they were done in the 1920s.
Screening will be two silent movie classics, a short film and a feature, accompanied by an orchestra led by the pianist Bernard Walz.
"It's a great show with two iconic people of the silent era," Jan said.
"The short film is by Melies, the man who inspired the recent film Hugo and who created A Trip to the Moon, although This time we are showing The Kingdom of the Fairies created in 1903," she said.
"The main film is Safety Last! (1923) which contains probably the most famous image of the silent movie era and stars a favourite actor of early film, Harold Lloyd.
"It is an image from a scene of Harold Lloyd hanging from a clock high above New York," Jan said.
"This he did with part of his hand missing due to an accident."
Both films will be screening at the Mortdale RSL Club on Sunday, May 19 at 2pm.
