Hurstville's Jessie (Yu) Li has been inducted as a City of Sydney student ambassador.
She was one of 30 international students who were officially inducted as the City of Sydney's International Student Leadership Ambassadors (ISLA) at an event at Town Hall on March 13.
The successful candidates for the ISLA program were chosen after an intensive three-stage selection process, including a written application, a practical group assessment and a final interview.
Sydney mayor Clover Moore attended the ceremony and rewarded Ms Li with her certificate.
Ms Li talked about how her experience as an international student in Sydney had influenced her social work studies.
"One of the advantages of studying as an international student in Sydney with ACAP is its cultural diversity," she said.
"I am keen on making friends and building my social network with people from different countries.
"Developing cultural competence is one of the most important principles of social work."
Jessie joins other alumni to be involved in the ISLA program.
A central aspect of the ambassadors' roles is to provide a voice for the estimated 35,000 international students who have chosen Sydney as the location for their tertiary education.
Duties also include providing support at City of Sydney events such as education forums, orientation weeks and festivals related to cultural diversity.
The honourary role also provides the opportunity to make friends and professional contacts, receive ongoing mentoring from program staff and alumni and an official Program Completion Certificate and reference letter.
Recruitment of the ISLA program was open to all institutions in Sydney, with the 30 successful ambassadors selected from 11 educational institutions. Between them, the ambassadors speak 25 languages and represent 12 different countries.
The ISLA program runs over 18 months, with the next round opening for applications in late 2020. For further enquiries regarding the program can be submitted via email at ISLA@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.
