A re-elected Coalition government will provide $5 million to upgrade Kogarah War Memorial Park Pool in Carss Park, Prime Minister and Cook MP Scott Morrison has announced.
The promise matches a commitment made in February by federal and state Labor candidates to provide $5 million in a federal Labor government's first budget to upgrade the pool.
Mr Morrison said the pool was an important community facility used by thousands of families.
"This funding will help refurbish the pool, ensuring it is upgraded to a high standard for the local community," Mr Morrison said.
"The passion and commitment by the Save Carss Park Pool action team is another demonstration of the close ties the pool has to its heritage and the local community."
Banks MP David Coleman said he understood the need to protect the pool.
"We appreciate and understand the significance the pool has in the local area not just for its historic ties to the champion swimmers it has fostered but also for the great sense of community it nurtures." Mr Coleman said.
"The Prime Minister and I will work closely with Georges River Council and their Open Space, Recreation and Community Facilities Strategy to ensure the pool provides access to all demographics of the community but retains its historic significance as a memorial to those who served."
More than 5500 local residents signed a petition to save the facility, which was opened in 1965 as a memorial pool to those who served.
In late 2016, the council obtained an independent engineering and building assessment from Cardno Engineers on the condition of all of its aquatic facilities in the local government area, including Kogarah War Memorial Pool.
"Both the Prime Minister and I have received many letters in regards to the council's plans for the pool and we appreciate and understand the significance of pool, not just for its historic ties to the champion swimmers but also for the great sense of community it nurtures." Mr Coleman said.
The residents' petition was presented at the council's meeting in late March.
The gallery was packed, with some residents wearing swimming goggles around their neck to show their support for the pool.
Councillors unanimously voted for ongoing funding to keep the pool operating for the 2019-20 swimming season, supporting a Notice of Motion by Cr Kathryn Landsberry.
A final decision was to depend on the final version of the council's draft Open Plan Strategy, which proposed several options for the site.
