Competitors couldn't have been more happy as the waves and weather all co-operated at the inaugural Shire Shreds youth surfing event held at Wanda Beach on Sunday.
A clean 3-4 ft swell kept all the surfing age groups on their toes and every competitor got to have two surfs.
Cronulla Surfing Academy's head coach Blake Johnston said the day was about giving back and sharing the good vibes with the community.
"The day was to encourage and show people to be grateful for the beautiful place where we live and the people we share it with"
The parent assist had the most fun and the mini skate ramps got totally worked over with junior whiz kid Jet de Haan showing what is possible if you dedicate yourself to training and a dream.
Shire Shred's was a continuation of this years Youth Week activities where Sutherland Council had partnered with Cronulla Surfing Academy, Headspace and Belong Inc. to bring a free, all-inclusive community youth surf festival for all levels and abilities.
Cronulla has been bathed in a week of swell that never dies,3-5ft from the south every day and the wind blowing offshore from the nor-west.
Once again this morning it is still head high and as the tide comes in the banks should start to fill in and produce another day of great waves everywhere.
Looking at the surf forecast it shows that it should be 2 ft-everyday this week so after yesterday's 6ft bombs on the northern beaches and reefs I don't know what to expect.
The swell direction will change to the nor-east later in the week which also shows how the warm weather patterns are affecting us.
Monday looks to be the pick of the week ahead with the waves swinging to the east and picking up to a 3ft peak.
The Corona Bali Protected, the third stop on the 2019 World Surf League Championship Tour , will be off again today due to small and inconsistent surf.
"Unfortunately the swell that we had fill in on Sunday and Monday has faded really fast leaving us with small, inconsistent surf this morning," said WSL Competition Director, Kieren Perrow. "There just isn't enough opportunity for competitors"
When competition resumes, the men's and women's Quarterfinals will host exciting, head-to-head matchups at Keramas. Men's Heat 3 will see a huge generational clash between Filipe Toledo (BRA) and 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA).
Heat 3 of the women's Quarterfinals will have major implications on who could take the Jeep Leader Jersey after Bali with reigning seven-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) taking on Courtney Conlogue (USA), who is fresh off a win at Bells Beach.
Still in Bali, Aussie Jack Freestone won the Red Bull Airborne Bali, a World Surf League specialty event that highlights aerial surfing. Freestone, 27, flew through the Qualifiers and Final in three-to-four foot (1 - 1.2 metre) waves at Keramas, a break adored by the air specialists due to the mega ramps offered by the wave.
Finally the 2019 ISA World Longboard Surfing Championship is set to become the biggest edition to date - breaking records for country, athlete and women participation.
104 athletes - 46 of whom are women - from 32 countries will represent their nations and go for Gold between May 26 and June 2 in Biarritz, France.
The record-breaking 2019 edition eclipses the 2018 edition in Wanning, China, which featured a then-record 71 athletes from 22 nations.
The year-on-year growth once more emphasises the successful growth and development of surfing around the globe - particularly in non-traditionally surfing nations - after the sport's inclusion on the Tokyo 2020 Sports Program in 2016.
The debut appearances in Biarritz of Afghanistan, Belgium and the Netherlands in this year's event further attest to this growth.
