Hurstville Museum and Gallery has again been recognised at the 2019 Museums and Galleries National Awards (MAGNA) for its St George on a Sunday exhibition.
The MAGNAs inspire and recognise best practice and innovation in the development of museums and galleries across Australia.
The museum received a Highly Commended award for Best Temporary or Travelling Exhibition - Level 1 for the St George on a Sunday exhibition.
St George on a Sunday ran from May to July 2018 and was a photographic exhibition that captured local residents pursuing their spare time activities.
For the exhibition, local residents were photographed by students from TAFE NSW St George College of Fine Arts, and highlighted the diverse community of the Georges River Council area.
More than 20 residents were featured, sharing their favourite spare time activities for the project.
They included individuals and groups, such as the Hurstville Community Garden Association and the Mortdale Scottish Country Dance Club.
The exhibition aimed to engage the community, celebrate its diversity and foster collaboration with organisations in the Georges River area.
This year the award ceremony took place in Alice Springs and Hurstville Museum and Gallery was represented by Cultural Services Coordinator, Bethany MacRae.
Bethany also presented at the conference speaking on the experiences of developing the exhibitions St George on a Sunday (2018) and Living Hurstville (2014).
The Hurstville Museum and Gallery now holds five MAGNA Awards having been recognised in 2016, 2017 and 2018 demonstrating the Museum as consistently producing high quality exhibitions.
