Arts Theatre Cronulla's new production is God of Carnage, a satiric comedy by award-winning French playwright Yasmina Reza, who has been referred to as one of the greatest comedy writers of our time.
The play made its London debut in 2008 and subsequently won a Laurence Olivier Award, with the Broadway production earning a Tony Award for best play.
The play centres on two couples who meet for the first time to discuss a fight in a local park between their young sons.
The premise explored is the idea that civility is surface level only until our own beliefs or ideals are challenged, then it doesn't take much for that veneer to be shattered and true colours revealed.
Reza suggests that if we can't resolve things amicably on a personal scale, how could it ever be possible on the world stage.
Intertwined with the serious questions being asked are hilarious moments involving a hamster, clafoutis, tulips, vomiting, rum, and an infuriating mobile phone!
Although a short play, God of Carnage is one that never stops moving.
The result is a piece of theatre that is funny, irreverent and totally left of centre.
The cast features Veronica Novak (Angela Gibson), Michael Novak (William Jordan), Alan Raleigh (Gavin Leahy) and Annette Raleigh (Gretchen Mach).
The production runs till Saturday, June 15.
Performances are on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, with three Sunday afternoon matinees.
