A video clip for the new community hit 'Changz' has been released by Sutherland Shire Council, following production of the intergenerational rap song earlier this year.
The council partnered with the District Singers and Endeavour Sports High School students to create the clip, that's aimed at smashing stereotypes and changing perceptions of what it means to be 'older'.
A total of 12 people took part in the writing, recording and filming of the rap song and video clip, which fosters intergenerational relationships by pairing older people with younger people, under the project tagline of 'You CAN teach an old dog new tricks'.
Sutherland mayor Carmelo Pesce says the music video is dynamic, fun and creative, just like Sutherland Shire seniors.
"Projects such as Changz help to redefine what it means to be a senior citizen and demonstrate the amazing range of skills and experience they have to share with younger generations," he said.
"I encourage everyone to have a look at the music video, share it with your family and friends and show everyone what Sutherland Shire seniors and students are made of."
Endeavour Sports High School student Javier Ramirez says students thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the project.
"It was an amazing and fun experience, doing hip hop with older people who didn't have that genre growing up," he said.
"We used this genre to speak out and compare our lives with how the older people grew up when they were kids."
Music teacher James Raxworthy says the project was something he had never seen in a classroom before.
"Watching the students and seniors interact and develop the song was definitely unique and you can see in the video just how much enjoyment they all got from the experience," he said.
Bill White from the District Singers, who plays the ukulele and raps in the song said he didn't know what to expect going into the project.
"Music brings people together and the music video shows commitment and creativity with the oldies working hard on the lyrics and the students singing and adding rhythm," My White said.
The song and video was put together by music producer Pat Thoms from Project Youth who said driving the creative project was a great experience.
"Hopefully our song and video will lead to 'changz' within Sutherland Shire and beyond, by proving 'you can teach an old dog new tricks'," Mr Thoms said.
