The Cronulla Beaches National Surfing Reserve was declared in September 2008 and is home to many of southern Sydney's premier surfing spots.
The Cronulla beaches and reefs are home to former world champion surfers as well as other important figures in the development of Australian surfing and surf lifesaving. One of the largest Surfing Reserves in Australia, the 'Nulla' is proudly preserved by a strong and active surfing community .
The Reserve acknowledges the surfing way of life, and links past, present and future generations who share the natural ocean environment in Cronulla. More specifically, it celebrates the riding of waves and the significant contribution that local surfers and surfing culture plays in our community.
In commemorating the 10 year anniversary since its inception, keen photographers are being encouraged to join in the celebrations by entering a Photo Competition designed to capture the 'Spirit of Surfing' within the Reserve area.
Images must be taken between June 1 and August 30, 2019 and must, in some way, capture the local surfing lifestyle. In addition, the photograph must showcase one of the significant locations in the Reserve,which includes Sandshoes, Shark Island, Cronulla Point, Merries Reef, Voodoo or the main beaches.
The top five photographers from each of the two categories (Open and Student) will be invited to a celebration event at Rydges in September, where Leader Chief Photographer John Veage, will announce the winner of each category and prizes awarded.
Photographers should try to tell a story and get creative finding different ways to convey the 'Spirit of Surfing', supported by sound technical photographic principles that showcases Sutherland Shires natural ocean environment.
