Waratah Private Hospital has opened a direct-access clinic that fast tracks affordable cataract surgery within weeks of the initial consult.
The Cataract Clinic aims to see patients within a week of contact for their initial consult, and then complete the actual procedure within two weeks.
This omits lengthy waiting times and several consultations.
"Patients experience a significant improvement post-surgery," cataract surgeon Raj Chalasani said.
"We see patients no longer requiring glasses, they can see their grandchildren clearer, and maintain an active lifestyle.
"Through the clinic, the surgery can happen quite quickly, depending on the patient's availability and what works for them. There's good technology at Waratah Private, which means it's a safe and quick day surgery, using local anaesthetic, with rapid recovery. The patient goes home the same day."
"The outcome of the surgery does depend on the patient's prior condition, so it's important to get cataracts seen to in a timely manner."
Dr Chalasani says this opportunity at Waratah Private Hospital negates the supply and demand issue of the public system.
"Eye clinics in the public system are currently sitting at a six to 12 month wait for the initial consult, and another six to 12 months for the actual surgery," he said.
The hospital is offers a competitive rate for non-insured patients.
