The first lumps of soil were shovelled at Blakehurst this week, marking the start of a new housing project for the area's aged care residents.
It was the official earth-moving beginnings by Estia Health in the suburb, which will house a state-of-the-art, large facility at a cost of $34 million.
Constructed in partnership with Growthbuilt, the new site replaced its original home that was demolished in 2018.
The home will increase the number of beds from 42 to105.
Situated next to Carss Bush Park, the five-storey home include 93 single bedrooms with ensuites, six couple's rooms with multiple dining, living, outdoor terraces, courtyards and multi-purpose areas for lifestyle events and activities.
There will also be a hairdressing salon, beauty therapy room and allied health service rooms, with visiting medical professionals to provide specialist services including physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
This will be delivered alongside Estia's core clinical care services, led by registered nurses on-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Estia Health chief operating officer, Sean Bilton, says it is exciting to return to the community.
"The new home will provide much needed aged care services," he said.
"This is part of Estia's continued commitment to providing residential aged care services to the area, where we already operate homes at Kogarah and Bexley."
Chief executive of Growthbuilt, Peter Sukkar, says the home will also provide plenty of new employment opportunities.
"While under construction, the new home will provide an estimated 130 construction jobs, including many from the area," he said.
The home is scheduled to complete in late-2020 and once fully occupied, will employ more than 120 people in a variety of care and hospitality roles.
