NSW coach Brad Fittler will announce a State of Origin vice-captain on Friday, with veteran five-eighth James Maloney considered the favourite.
James Tedesco and Jake Trbojevic could also be in the running when Fittler announces his decision at the traditional jersey presentation on Friday afternoon.
It is understood former NSW hardman Mark Geyer has been given the honour of handing out the jerseys for the must-win game in Perth.
Geyer played just three games for the Blues between 1989-91, but his confrontation with Queensland great Wally Lewis is in Origin folklore.
Geyer also played three seasons for the defunct Western Reds between 1995-97.
Maloney was overlooked in favour of Cody Walker for game one but was recalled after the Blues lost the series-opener in Brisbane.
The 33-year-old has been amongst the most vocal players during the team's training sessions at Hale School during the week.
"Jimmy's slotted straight back in. He's a larrikin. He's really good at bringing the group together," NSW hooker Damien Cook told AAP.
The appointment comes following suggestions skipper Boyd Cordner could be given a spell during the contest.
The 17-man squad includes St George Illawarra enforcer Tariq Sims and Cronulla star Wade Graham, both of whom also play left-edge for their NRL clubs.
Cook said Maloney's big-game experience would be key on Sunday night.
"He's moved around a few (NRL) clubs because they want to make it to the grand final - he's done that his whole career," he said.
"He's just a leader and been very vocal during our ball work sessions, being one of the halves. He's a big help for (Nathan Cleary) and me as well.
"I'm looking forward to playing alongside him and if he gets that vice-captain role, it's well-deserved."
