Women's Origin could go to 35-min halves

A bumper crowd of 10,515 packed into North Sydney Oval for the Blues' 14-4 win over Queensland on Friday night, outstripping the NRL's expectations and growing by more than 3500 on last year.

After growing exponentially over the last 12 months, the question is where next for women's rugby league.

Expansion of the NRLW will be discussed at the end of the year - however the NRL is cautious not to grow too quick given they are still getting the grassroots in order.

Similarly, concerns about player depth are likely to hinder the Women's Origin expanding to a three-game series in the near future.

And Patmore said the best way to grow could be to extend the game from 60 to 70 minutes.

"It's been a conversation all week. Do we go to three? Do we play 80 minutes? We're at a stage now we've got to consolidate where we're at," Patmore said.

"We've got the NRLW and the younger grades coming through. We can't rush it. We've just got to have a real good strategic plan on how we're going to keep growing the ladies' space.

"Eventually I'd like to play 70 minutes.

"But to play three Origin games. These girls, their fitness levels are good. But the recovery to do that every second week, three in a row, I think it's a bit beyond them at the moment."

Given female rugby players are only semi-professional, they have not been hardened by years of fulltime training like their male counterparts.

But as the game grows, and the women inch towards professionalism, they will be able to punch out bigger minutes.

Patmore said the support the fixture attracted brought a tear to his eye and he was excited about the future.

"I turned up last year and I was shocked by the lines and you get a bit emotional about it," Patmore said.

"I thought I'd be sweet this year. I got off the bus and you're looking each way and it still choked me up.

"It's an amazing thing the support the game is getting."
