Georges River Council has released its draft Cultural Strategy, which presents a framework of actions to make the Georges River area more culturally rich.
The release follows extensive community engagement and consultation from March 2018 to March 2019.
Georges River Council Mayor Kevin Greene said that community consultation has revealed that issues around communication, sustainability and accessibility have been raised as priority areas to address in order to increase cultural participation.
"Feedback we received made it clear to us that there's a desire within the community to be better connected with each other, through events, online and in creative spaces," Councillor Greene said.
"It's also clear that we need to improve accessibility to our cultural production spaces, so that people of all abilities and cultural backgrounds are included.
"With such a diverse community, we also need to ensure that the strategy fosters cross-cultural activities and events, and this would include developing and supporting events and programs that prioritise and promote Aboriginal knowledge and identity.
"At the forefront of many people's minds is the future of green spaces and public domain, and sustainability and environmental issues are areas that our community believes should be a focus of cultural activations.
"We weren't surprised to learn that our community wants to see more ambitious public art projects in the area, along with an increase in cultural infrastructure to help deliver them.
"The strategy aims to achieve a number of short and medium-term actions over the next 10 years including development of a Public Art Policy, a Town Centre Cultural Activation Strategy, a Night Time Economy Strategy and investigating a framework for funding future public art and cultural activity.
"I encourage people to review the draft Georges River Cultural Strategy and provide their feedback to help us deliver a strategy which positions the Georges River area as a major player in the Sydney cultural scene," Councillor Greene said.
The draft Georges River Cultural Strategy will be on public exhibition from Monday, July 1 to Monday, July 29, 2019.
