A 52-year-old woman from the St George area is in a serious but stable condition after being stabbed in the neck following a carjacking at Kogarah last night.
The woman was on her way home when a 24-year-old Pyrmont man jumped into the back of her Toyota Corolla in Ocean Street and ordered her to take him to the Eastern Suburbs.
Minutes earlier the man had run from St George Hospital after smashing a glass door when confronted by hospital staff who tried to prevent him from leaving without clearance for treatment he had been receiving that afternoon.
Police will allege the man then entered the woman's car and, armed with a multi-purpose too, forced her to drive him east.
Upon reaching Trafalgar Street, Brighton-Le-Sands, the woman stopped the car and attempted to escape.
While attempting to leave the vehicle a struggle ensued and the woman was stabbed in the neck.
The man then drove the vehicle to Crawford Street in Monterey where it was involved in a collision with two other cars before continuing and then crashing into a brick wall
The offender was trapped in the car and later released and taken to St George Hospital where he underwent surgery for head and abdominal injuries.
The 52-year-old female victim was assisted by passersby and then treated by ambulance paramedics before being taken to St George Hospital for emergency surgery to her neck. She is a serious but stable condition.
Commander St George Police Station, Superintendent Julian Griffiths, said it was a serious but isolated incident.
''I find it extremely disturbing as most people would that someone who is driving home has been attacked in this fashion," Superintendent Griffiths said.
''It's obviously a concern that someone travelling along can be taken on by a male under those circumstances.
"I do take some solace in the fact that the male was working in isolation, it's not an incident that frequently occurs in this area.
''At this stage we believe the incident was random there is no information to suggest they were know to each other."
Superintendent Griffiths appealed to the public for any information that could help police with their enquiries.
''I would appeal to anyone who has not yet spoken to police and who may have information, or may have video footage through their cars or their homes to contact CrimeStoppers or St George Police."
The 24-year-old man is under police guard in St George Hospital.

A woman driver, 52, was assaulted with a multi-purpose tool after a carjacking at Kogarah last night.
Her alleged assailant, a man, 24, subsequently crashed the car at Brighton-Le-Sands, injuring a woman in another car.
The man, who was also injured, is under police guard in St George Hospital.
"Police will allege that about 9pm on Tuesday, a 52-year-old woman driving a silver Toyota Corolla was stationary on Ocean Street, Kogarah, when a man entered her vehicle through a rear door, armed himself with a multi-purpose tool, threatened her and demanded she drive him to Maroubra," a police spokesman said.
"Upon reaching Trafalgar Street, Brighton Le Sands, the woman got out of the car, and was assaulted by the man with the tool, before he entered the vehicle and drove away.
"The woman was assisted by members of the public and emergency services were contacted.
"She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for lacerations to her face and neck, and taken to St George Hospital in a serious but stable condition where she remains undergoing surgery.
"A short time later, the silver Corolla collided with a white Corolla - which subsequently collided with a Mercedes - which was stationary at the intersection of Crawford Road and President Avenue.
"The female driver of the white Toyota Corolla received minor injuries as a result of the crash.
"The silver Corolla continued before colliding with a brick wall outside a unit block on President Avenue.
"The driver and sole occupant, a man, 24, was trapped for a short time, before being extricated, arrested, and taken to St George Hospital for mandatory testing and treatment to head injuries, where he remains in a stable condition under police guard.
"Crime scenes were established on both Trafalgar Street and President Avenue.
"It will also be alleged the man damaged property inside St George Hospital, which he left before the incidents."
