Fifty years on and the magic of the moon is still there for Hurstville resident Gary Anderson.
Mr Anderson got up at 6am this morning to see the lunar eclipse.
He took this photo at 6.40am looking west from his home in Crosby Avenue, Hurstville.
Starting at around 6.01 AM (AEST), the partial eclipse was clearly visible.
Sydney Observatory said this will be the last lunar eclipse for another couple of years.
"Because it is the anniversary of the Moon Landing this weekend I thought it was ironical that there was an eclipse," Mr Anderson said.
"I'm 62 and I remember sneaking out of school at South Sydney Boys to watch the Moon Landing in 1969 at a mate's place," he said.
"Walking back into school we ran into the deputy principal who asked where we had been.
"'Watching the Moon Landing,' we told him. For that he gave us two cuts of the cane.
"Fifty years later after getting caned for skipping school to watch the moon landing I'm still fascinated by the moon," he said.
"I was inspired for a career in IT after the magic in 1969 that achieved it.
"I know things have changed. With movies like Star Wars the kids say 'so what!'
"But to me it still sounds like magic that man could walk on the moon," he said.
