According to recent research 62 per cent of Australians would like to change their smiles.
Dr Rolf Schimann of One Smile Orthodontics in Hurstville says while the optimal age for treatment is most often during the teen years, orthodontics is definitely no longer just for kids.
"For some, it's because they didn't have access to treatment when they were younger; they may have a particular tooth that has been bothering them for a while, or maybe their teeth started shifting later in life," says Dr Schimann who, along with his private practice, also tutors post graduate orthodontic students at the University of Sydney.
"Whatever their reason for coming to see us, the common thread for all is that they want to feel self-assured and be able to flash those pearly whites with confidence."
Dr Schimann said straightening teeth was not only about being able to show a great smile. It can also have significant health benefits.
"Crowded teeth can be hard to clean and lead to gum disease so it makes good sense to address the problem," he said.

Advancements in orthodontic mechanics have come a long way in the past 10 years and Invisalign clear aligners are definitely the first choice for adults.
Patients can take these thin clear custom-made mouthguards in and out when they need to and be discreetly straightening their teeth without peers and colleagues even noticing.
And parents of teens appreciate the fact they are removable for easy and effective teeth cleaning.
Traditional braces haven't been left behind in this surge of invisible orthodontics though. Brackets are now far less noticeable and much more efficient.
"I have been treating smiles for over 30 years and with current mechanics, underpinned by our specialist orthodontic knowledge, a patient's treatment experience has never been better," Dr Schimann said.
"We can digitally scan a patient at their consultation appointment and then show them a simulation of what their teeth will look like once treatment is complete."
However, Dr Schimann warns that it's important to look for a specialist orthodontic practice when considering treatment.
"I perform a lot of corrective orthodontic procedures and patients can often end up paying double if they choose on price alone," he said.
"As specialists, ultimately we want the best outcome for our patients and this is what drives our treatment options and face to face care."
