Little people planted big futures at their stomping ground ahead of Sunday, July 28, for National Tree Day.
Children from Franklin Road Early Education Centre at Woolooware dug in the soil and planted seedlings to make their play space greener and bursting with life.
It was part of the 'Get Grubby' initiative with 'Dirt Girl' and Planet Art. 'Dirt Girl' from Grubby TV is a popular kids' television star, who took the pre-schoolers on a natural explorer activity.
A five per cent increase in tree cover can reduce nearby daytime temperatures by 2.3 degree celcius. Time spent in green outdoor spaces can reduce stress and improve happiness.
Sutherland Shire Council deputy mayor Steven Simpson says there is a major focus on environmental education at the council's 11 early education centres.
"Children are very capable learners and they love to know about taking care of our planet and our environment," he said.
"The children at Franklin Road couldn't wait to get their hands dirty to plant some trees and learn about why they are an essential part of our world."
