A man, 56, suffered severe injuries during a violent assault and robbery in his Arncliffe home.
Police later arrested a man, 18, at Rockdale and charged him with a string of offences.
A police spokesman said the victim was assaulted and robbed of a bank card in his unit on Princes Highway.
"He sustained severe injuries including lacerations to his head and face, multiple rib fractures, a possible puncture to his right lung, scratches, bleeding, bruising to his head and face, and a bite to his right shoulder area," the spokesman said.
"Officers attached to St George Police Area Command arrived at the scene shortly after the assault where the 18-year-old ran from the scene.
"Officers followed on foot, however, were unable to apprehend the man.
"About 4pm later that day, officers attended the home of the 18-year-old on Villiers Street, Rockdale and arrested the man in the backyard.
"When searching the 18-year-old, police discovered 2.11 grams of Methylamphetamine in his pocket and the man was conveyed to Kogarah Police Station.
"While officers were weighing the methylamphetamine, the 18-year-old grabbed the prohibited drug and attempted to ingest it before officers forced him to spit it out.
"He was placed back in his cell and continued to behave in an aggressive manner towards police.
"The Public Order and Riot Squad attended to extract the man from his cell. He was taken to St George Hospital under police guard to undergo observation and treatment for drug ingestion."
After his release from hospital, the man was charged with:
- Aggravated robbery with wounding
- Wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
- Intentionally choke etc person without consent
- Go onto or into or remain on or in running lines (enter rail corridor)
- Resist police officer in the execution of duty
- Possess prohibited drug (methlyamphetamine)
- Self-administer prohibited drug
He was refused bail and is due to face Sutherland Local Court on September 23.
