A unity walk to support the work of Parkingson's NSW will be held at Kiama on Sunday August 25 for people living with Parkinson's, their families, friends and colleagues.
The walk is being organised by Lesley Errington, co-ordinator of Kiama Parkinson's Support Group who invited St George and Sutherland Shire residents to take part and support the support the work of Parkinson's NSW.
Over the past 11 years the event has attracted 16,700 participants who have helped Parkinson's NSW raise more than $1,000,000 for essential services such as counselling, Support Groups, an infoline staffed by registered nurses, education and fundraising for research.
"Parkinson's NSW is a for-purpose organisation striving to make life better for people living with Parkinson's, their families and carers," Lesley said.
"We have a lot of visitors down from the St George and Sutherland Shire area on weekends, and so we are throwing it open to them as well," she said.
"Kiama Support Group is one of more than 75 across the state. It is run by local volunteers supported by Parkinson's NSW staff.
"It offers support, advice, information, resources and social opportunities for people living with Parkinson's".
The Kiama Unity Walk in the Park will be held on Sunday 25 August 2019 at 11am, at Black Beach, Kiama, at the end of the main street.
The walk is along a wide, flat path between the two rock pools (a distance of about 1km or 2km return). There are three amenity blocks along the way mostly with disabled access.
Apart from the necessary medication exercise is one of, if not the best, thing to slow the progression of Parkinson's disease through the idea that practising movement will improve movement.
Barry Silburn, Walk organiser said, "It is not a competition to see who comes first but rather a friendly, enjoyable walk for all, taking as long as you like and doing as many laps as you like.
"The track is well suited for people with walkers or rollators, or parents with strollers etc. Those who would like to try something a bit more challenging may do so by continuing up past the Anglican Church and Pavilion down to Surf Beach, and on to Kendall's Beach. If you are lucky you may even see a whale or two," he said.
At the end of the walk the Rotary Club will hold a sausage sizzle and there will be live entertainment from the jazz band Little Light.
