Jannali man charged after assaulting off-duty cop in Royal National Park

A Jannali man has been charged after being arrested by an off-duty police officer in the Royal National Park on Sunday.

Police will allege that about 1pm on August 18, an off-duty senior constable was riding a bicycle on the Ululla Falls track, when he had a near collision with a motorcycle travelling on the same track.

The officer rode to the Waterfall entrance to the track, and flagged down the motorcycle rider.

The pair spoke, before the motorcycle rider attempted to ride away, with the officer taking hold of the handle bars to stop him.

The rider allegedly attempted to break the officers grip by bending his fingers back, and then continued to resist as a physical altercation ensued while the officer attempted to restrain the man.

The officer restrained the man, who then allegedly tried to run away, and was restrained again.

Police were contacted, before officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command attended and arrested the 25-year-old man and took him to Sutherland Police Station.

He was charged with assaulting an officer in execution of duty, resisting an officer in execution of duty, common assault, and a number of offences under the National Parks and Wildlife Regulations.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on August 22.
