The Australian cycling team won five medals, comprising one gold to Ella Sibley and four silver, at the 2019 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Germany.
In the team sprint, St George Cycling Club rider John Trovas and teammates Sam Gallagher and Carlois Carismo clocked the second-fastest time in qualifying with 45.162 seconds, before defeating their Greek competitors (45.023) in the early rounds earlier this month.
After making the final, the young trio scorched the Frankfurt track in 44.681, the fastest time ever ridden by an Australian under-19 outfit. But they were beaten for the gold medal by just six hundredths of a second by the strong team from India (44.625).
Team member Gallagher's red hot form continued on day two, with the Victorian winning two heats on the way to picking up a second silver in the keirin.
On day three, Gallagher clocked a personal best in the sprint qualification to qualify second fastest (10.159). As did Kogarah Bay's John Trovas who qualified 10th (10.375).
Trovas won his round of 16 heat but his campaign came to an end in the next round which would see him finish 10th overall. Gallagher ended the competition in fifth after being knocked out by the eventual silver medalist in the quarter-finals.
Trovas's St George teammate Rohan Haydon-Smith finished a credible 10th in the competitive men's scratch race.
Haydon-Smith then backed up his scratch race top 10 result with another 10th (1:03.315) in the time trial.
Sibley won dual medals for the championships after winning gold in the scratch race and silver in the keirin, while Gallagher raced to dual silver in the team sprint and keirin. In the omnium, Graeme Frislie overcame two crashes to take silver.
The Australian team finished fifth at the championships with five medals behind host nation Germany who finished on top with nine including five gold. New Zealand finished second with three gold medals.
