UPDATE 6.15am Thursday
Kingsway at Caringbah is fully reopened after crews worked last night to repair the burst water main and fill the sinkhole which developed.
The work caused major delays for traffic in the area during the Wednesday afternoon peak.
While one water problem was fixed, another was evident on Thursday morning, with water bubbling from a main further along Kingsway in front of a bakery near the train station.
UPDATE: 3:15pm
Sydney Water is working to isolate a main break that occurred on the corner of Kingsway and Mackay Street, Caringbah
"Safety is our number one priority and our crews were on site quickly," a spokesman for Sydney Water said.
"Once our crews have isolated the break they will start urgent repairs. At this stage, it's too early to tell what caused the break.
"NSW Police and NSW Fire and Rescue are assisting with local traffic diversions.
"Sydney Water Customer Advocates are on site to assist any affected customers. Sydney Water sincerely apologises to affected customers and motorists and thanks them for their patience."
Responding to criticisms on social media about the number of water main breaks and the water wastage at a time of Level 1 water restrictions in Sydney, a Sydney Water spokesman said the drought was causing damage to the water authority's infrastructure.
"Drought has placed significant pressure on our network, increasing the number of breaks - as it has across the whole of Eastern Australia," she said. "We are committed to responding to leaks and breaks across our network, focusing on minimising impacts to customers."
The bus that was trapped in a hole caused by the burst main was safely removed about 2.30pm with the help of a tow truck with crane.
There is extensive damage to the road surface where the bus was lodged and it will take some time for work crews to make repairs.
Live Traffic NSW advises traffic conditions in the area are still heavy with the Kingsway closed in the eastbound direction.
Diversions are in place via Taren Point Rd, Captain Cook Dr, Gannons Rd, back to Kingsway.
Westbound traffic is also heavy and motorists are being urged to avoid the area
Westbound traffic on Kingsway must continue onto President Avenue and can use Kareena Road to return to Kingsway.
Eastbound on President Avenue has reopened and motorists will travel under contra flow conditions along Kingsway from President Avenue to Jacaranda Road.
Allow extra travel time and expect delays.

A tow truck is trying to pull a bus out of a hole in the Kingsway caused by a burst water main this morning.
Water is still flowing from the main and the traffic eastbound is still closed.
Aussie Home Loans Caringbah principal Peter Kiss described the chaos at the intersection opposite the branch.
"I had my head buried in work when I heard the commotion outside. I looked out the window and there was a burst water main," Mr Kiss said.
"It wasn't deep but it was gushing out in large sheets of water, flowing out of large cracks in the road like a fast flowing river.
"The cracks were almost in the middle of the intersection of Kingsway and MacKay Street.
"A number of cars continued going through and then a bus came through and turned left without any trouble.
"Then another bus travelling east towards Cronulla tried to get across the intersection and its right rear wheel sunk into the road down to the top of its wheel.
"The driver tried to rev up and get out but couldn't. Fortunately, there were only two to three passengers on the bus and they were able to step off without any trouble.
"A large flatbed truck loaded with bags of sand and tiles tried to get across the intersection but I went out and signalled for him to stop. He moved along the side and was able to turn right into Port Hacking Road South.
"At the moment the bus is still stuck in the hole and water is still flowing."
Sydney Buses confirmed five people were on the bus at the time of the incident and were put on to another service.
