The Australian Air League Riverwood Hornets Squadron has been named Best Squadron in Field at the AAL's state championships, the NSW Group Review.
Riverwood Squadron cadets also took top honours in a number of categories at the annual NSW Group Review, held on Sunday, September 8 at The Crest Athletics Field, Bass Hill.
There were hundreds of Cadets from across the NSW in attendance.
Marching competitions were conducted throughout the day for smaller Sections, larger Flights and Flag Party's, with Cadets entering aircraft model competitions, solo Drum and Bugle competitions and Marching Band competitions.
The Cadets from Riverwood Squadron have been preparing and training for these competitions for many months and were well rewarded with picking up first place in numerous competitions including Junior Section Drill, Flight Drill, Squad Drill, Best Band, Best Drum Major.
AAL Riverwood Squadron Commanding Officer, Chris Bailey said numerous of the Squadron's cadets were awarded First Place in Solo Snare Drumming, Solo Tenor Drumming and Solo Bugler, and numerous second and third placings in other competitions resulted in the Squadron taking out the coveted 'Best Squadron in Field' award on the day.
"The training and preparations that our Riverwood Squadron Cadets have undertaken for these State Championships will stand them well when they head overseas to Hawaii for the 2019 Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade on December 7," Mr Bailey said.
"The Australian Air League Riverwood Hornets Marching Band received an invitation to participate as a representative of Australia at this prestigious event.
"It will be a great honour for the Riverwood Squadron Cadets to be involved in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade and Commemoration Ceremonies."
Riverwood Squadron offer theoretical and practical tuition in all aspects of aviation and related subjects.
"We also offer opportunity for Cadets from eight-years-of-age to undertake leadership development, drill and marching training, refining teamwork/collaboration skills, music/marching bands, aircraft modelling, camps/hikes, Duke of Edinburgh's Award program, visits to air shows, ANZAC Day ceremonies and community service activities," Mr Bailey said.
"It's lots of fun for the youth who will make new friends whilst learning new skills."
Squadron membership has steadily grown in recent years to over 100 Cadets on roll.
New members are always welcome. Riverwood Squadron operate from their own hall, situated at Bland Oval, Bonds Rd, Riverwood (Near M5 Overpass).
Riverwood Squadron conduct weekly Training Nights every Friday evening 7pm - 9.30pm.
