Sutherland have fallen short of another Sydney Hockey Premier League premiership, going down 3-0 to arch-rivals Moorebank Liverpool on Saturday.
Sutherland and Moorebank Liverpool have shared an intense rivalry in recent years. Sutherland downed Moorebank in the 2017 grand final, with Moorebank exacting revenge in the decider last season.
Sutherland were keen to reverse that result but trailed 2-0 to a pair of early Moorebank goals at Sydney Olympic Park.
Sutho removed goalkeeper Nathan Ackroyd as they chased goals in the dying stages, only for the minor premiers to take advantage, scoring a third goal to secure the result and the title as they completed an undefeated season.
Meanwhile, there was success for Tartans Hockey Club as they won the division five title.
Tartans needed golden-goal extra-time to down Ryde 2-1 at Sydney Olympic Park last weekend. Striker Duncan Holm dragged Tartans level in the second half from a penalty corner with the game ending 1-1. Andrew Wilson then scored the winner for the shire club in extra-time.
The victory made it two premierships in as many seasons for Tartans after the team won the division six competition last season. This year was only the second year that the club had fielded a men's team in its 60-year history.
Tartans are one of only two clubs from the Sutherland Shire that field men's teams in the Sydney Hockey competition, alongside Sutherland.
Tartans Hockey Club was formed as a club for women and girls in the early 1960s. But the growth in boys' participation has seen the club welcoming boys over the last decade. The development of the new Marang Parklands Hockey Fields at Greenhills enabled the club to expand into fielding a men's team.
"After the success of 2018 we were confident that the men would be competitive this year but they have really excelled by taking out successive titles," Tartans secretary Janice Tully said.
"We are looking forward to 2020 and the opportunities to continue to build on our first two years in men's hockey."
The team were minor premiers after 18 rounds, winning all but two games to finish clearly ahead of second placed Wests. Playing Wests in the semi-final proved to be a close game with Tartans winning 3-2 to advance straight to the grand final.
The club is aiming to move up a division next year and add another team, with Tartans keen to hear from any interested players.
