Blue Mountains residents woke up to a surprise spring snowfall today [Tuesday, September 17].
Temperatures dropped overnight with villages including Blackheath, Medlow Bath and Mount Victoria covered in snow in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The temperature in Katoomba was only expected to reach 6 degrees on Tuesday, according the Bureau of Meteorology.
The bureau's Tuesday forecast for Katoomba stated: "Snow heavy at times in the morning. Winds south to southeasterly 15 to 20 km/h becoming light in the morning then becoming south to southeasterly 20 to 30 km/h in the middle of the day."
Meanwhile, other Blue Mountains villages were enjoying steady rainfall on Tuesday morning. Rain was forecast in Springwood for the day, easing to showers on Wednesday, with a top temperature of 11 degrees predicted for Tuesday.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Abrar Shabren said the snow has been triggered by a frontal system crossing the state from the west overnight, which has also brought significant rainfall to Sydney - at 9am more than 19mm had been recorded at Observatory Hill since Monday, with more rain to come throughout Tuesday.
Temperatures in Sydney dropped about 10 degrees in an hour from a balmy 28 to a wintry 18 on Monday afternoon as the front arrived.
The city is forecast to reach a frosty maximum of 15 on Tuesday.
A developing low pressure system will see rainfall continue from Sydney up to the Mid North Coast for the remainder of Tuesday and into Wednesday, before weakening.
