A free and confidential financial counselling service run by The Salvation Army is ocming to Sutherland Shire.
Moneycare is one of the largest providers of financial counselling and related services in Australia.
More than 130,000 people accessed Moneycare's financial counselling services in 2018, and that number is increasing. Among these, the most rapidly increasing groups were Australians aged 18 to 24, and those aged 65 and over.
Every year The Salvation Army holds events across the nation as part of Anti-Poverty Week. There is one at Miranda on October 8.
The information day aims to help people get back to financial well-being.
The head of Moneycare, Tony Devlin, is encouraging anyone interested or needing help managing their finances to attend a community hub from 10am-1pm at 23 Kiora Road.
The hub will bring together Moneycare and Shire Salvos, along with Orana, Sydney Water, the Energy and Water Ombudsmen, ATO, Centrelink, Wesley Housing Services and BeConnected Community to offer financial support and answer questions about finance.
"Moneycare counsellors can help with a range of issues including money management and information on how to reduce debt," Mr Devlin said.
He says financial counsellors can provide options that are safer and more effective to risky forms of borrowing or going to commercial providers for help.
"Pay day loans, buy now pay later, and consumer leases (goods rental) are often acquired when people find themselves in financially vulnerable situations. However, these arrangements will usually only worsen the problem," Mr Devlin said.
"Moneycare financial counsellors can be powerful advocates. Not only can they help you address your current situation, they also can help you build longer term capability and resilience, so you can stay on top of your finances."
