Imagine waking up to the view of one of Australia's most picturesque lakes in a place that most people only get to visit in their holidays.

That's exactly what the residents of one retirement village get to do every day.

Built on the edge of beautiful Lake Macquarie - Australia's largest coastal salt water lake - Wangi Shores is a retirement village with a difference.

It offers an idyllic, coastal living lifestyle surrounded by the best nature has to offer plus plenty of convenience and comfort.

It's part of the community of Wangi Wangi, the friendly Hunter region village thats name says it all. The indigenous word 'wangi' has been translated variously as water, night owl or dark green tree. Repeated it means abundance. It's a natural paradise.

Wangi Shores offers the perfect location for people looking for the chance to relax and enjoy their retirement but also be close to everything.

It's just a 90 minute drive north along the M1 from Sydney, and 45 minutes south of Newcastle, Australia's vibrant seventh largest city.

As well as the lake and all it has to offer, there are miles of some of the coast's most pristine and spectacular beaches to explore.

Like being on holidays all year round

Wangi Shore residents Lyn and Ron Lawless said buying their lake-front villa was one of the best decisions they have ever made.

The couple moved in just over 12 months ago, a short time after selling their large home at Bolton Point as part of their strategy to downsize to a smaller place.

"Our home was large with a big, big yard that needed a lot of maintenance," said Lyn. "It was taking up a lot of our time and getting more and more difficult for us to look after.

"We hadn't really even considered a retirement village when we sold our home, we were just making plans for our future."

But a chance visit to Wangi Shores quickly helped make up their mind.

"We came out here one day after seeing an ad, just to have a look," said Lyn. "But when we walked into what is now our villa we knew it was the place for us, the view of the lake was just lovely. We'll never get tired of that view.

"We just nodded at each other. And we're so happy here, it does feel like being on holidays every day."

Lyn said she loves the Wangi Shores' lifestyle - particularly walking to Wangi Wangi along the lakeside path and visiting some of the many eateries - especially the popular Wangi bakery - and the social network of her fellow villagers.

Room to breathe

Wangi Shores was established in 2008 by the Wangi Workers Club with the aim of creating a welcoming community and an alternative to traditional retirement living. All residents receive free membership to the club providing an instant sense of belonging.

Located on a waterfront reserve, with stylish architecture and modern facilities, the villas' open plan living rooms lead out to balconies with double-glass doors that invite the outside in.

With only three brand new villas remaining in Stage 3A, with prices ranging from $569,900 to $599,900, Wangi Shores has decided to open two new stages, 3B and 5, for Expressions of Interest.
