On October 23 the Sutherland Shire Environment Center in association with the Gardens of Stones Alliance will screen a documentary about the breathtaking "pagoda" landscapes north of Lithgow.
Gardens of Stone A Living Landscape showcases the unique landscapes which currently have no protection listing.
"The film, directed by award winning Australian documentary filmmaker, Tom Zubrycki, tells the story of the efforts of traditional owners, bushwalkers and scientists to save the Gardens of Stone", said Jenni Gormley spokesperson for Sutherland Shire Environment Center.
"The Gardens of Stone is the last unprotected region of Myles Dunphy's 1932 Blue Mountains National Park scheme.
"The reservation of this beautiful landscape would complete Myles' visionary plan for a Greater Blue Mountains National Park."
Following the film, the Gardens of Stones Alliance will present Destination Pagoda, a visitor plan that positions Lithgow as the gateway to the Gardens of Stone area.
Dr Stephen Allen of the Colong Foundation for Wildernes said the striking sandstone towers, rise up though a diverse forest like ancient temples and these "pagoda landscapes" have the pulling power that Lithgow needs to bring conservation tourism to life in the region.
"Only the iconic sandstone pagoda landscapes can define the town as a major tourism attraction," Dr Allen said.
"Destination Pagoda is a new visitor plan to provide an economic future for the region as it transitions away from coal production.
"This world-class tourism and conservation reserve is right on Lithgow doorstep. Lithgow's pagoda landscapes can deliver economic, community and environmental benefits to the town."
- The film will screen from 6pm on Wednesday, October 23 at Hall 2, Stapleton Avenue Community Center, Stapleton Avenue, Sutherland.
