It was another busy week for Cronulla surfers culminating with the 2019 Tradies Surfmasters and H2coco Beach Clean Up campaign held at Elouera Beach.
Former Australian champion and EBC stalwart Glenn Pringle ensured a title would remain on local turf, taking out the over-50s Tradies men's division. Pringle shone in the final, posting a 14.10 two-wave total for a variety of giant swooping turns.
Kiama's Bruce Flint win the over-60s men's division on the high-tide shorebreak. Flint won by a meager 0.3 margin against local surfers Wayne Tyte, Wayne Roach and Kevin Hall.
Belinda Koorey felt at home in the clean conditions, taking out the over-35/40 women's event. The northern beaches surfer excelled especially in her opening heat, with an excellent 8.17 wave score that allowed her to gain the edge against Cronulla's Nichola Turner.
Mereweather's Paul Snow made his journey to southern Sydney worthwhile, winning the over-35s and over-40s men's divisions beating Cronulla's Ricky Marshall, Matt Whyte and Ian Spencer.
H2coco and Surfing NSW's Beach Clean Up campaign #surfsupcleanup ran concurrently with the Tradies Surfmasters with more than 40 surfers participating. The event, which linked in with Surfrider Foundation Australia and Cronulla Christian Surfers, saw participants clean rubbish from the sands and surrounding area of Elouera Beach.
Event four on the 2019-2020 Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps Series at Coffs Harbour saw seven new champions crowned last weekend after a handful of thrilling finals in decent four-foot surf at Diggers Beach.
Cronulla Boardriders junior girl surfer Grace Gosby kept the competitive flag flying with a win in the under-12s after a close second in the Cronulla event last month.
Caringbah's Paris Whittaker cleaned up at this year's Police and Emergency Services Surfing Games held in Wollongong over the weekend. The 'Constable' won the open women's and the open under-45s, also placing third in the open longboard final.
Her father, Brad, wasn't to be outdone, representing Marine Rescue NSW. Whittaker senior won the open longboard final and placed second in the over-45s shortboard event.
Police and Emergency Services workers and volunteers from across NSW will be competing in more than 40 sports all this week.
The 18th Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games will be held at different venues around the Illawarra from October 17 to 24 attracting more than 5,000 competitors.
Cronulla has been pounded with some decent size waves over the last few days with a 4-6 ft sou-east swell thumping on our disintegrating sandbanks.The reefs and points have had some nice waves but the beachies are only surf-able on the high tide and its close out City on most of them and its been hard to find a corner.
The swell has dropped this morning to around 3 ft with a slight offshore keeping it clean and the forecast shows that its going to get smaller over the next couple of days.
We do see a small nor-east swell spike on Saturday after a strong onshore on Friday afternoon pushes up the wave size back to 3 ft-we are entering into a Summer weather pattern now with only small windows of offshores in the mornings before the dreaded nor easters blow.
Its going to be a long summer.
They are up to the quarters at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the penultimate stop on the 2019 World Surf League Championship Tour ,Its been on hold for two days because of swell size.
"It's really small conditions " Jessi Miley-Dyer, VP Tours and Competition, said. "It's a beautiful clean morning but not much swell on offer. There is better swell coming later in the forecast so we're going to have a look at that but for the moment we'll be off for today and the next day."
The next call will be made this morning after a major Brazilian drama with the early interference elimination of Jeep Frontrunner Cabriel Medina in the R/16 and a potential Title race shakeup in Peniche-leaving Jordy Smith,Andino,Toledo and Ferreria to fight it out and look to make up crucial ground on World No. 1 Medina as the season nears its final showdown.
In the womens,the World Title race continues to focus all attention on Hawaiian Jeep Frontrunner Carissa Moore who has a shot at claiming a fourth crown in Portugal with Lakey Peterson and Sally Fitz still chasing..
